Thermal cameras and hunting: why it's not the same device

The term "thermal camera" covers two product families that aren't judged on the same criteria, and mixing them up leads to a bad purchase.

Looking for a thermal device for hunting or night observation almost always leads to the same comparator, the one for building-diagnostics and industrial-inspection cameras that makes up the rest of this site. That's a mistake, and a costly one: the criteria that matter aren't the same, and an excellent measuring device can be a very poor choice for spotting a boar three hundred meters away.

Two radically different goals

A diagnostics camera answers the question what is the exact temperature of this point. Its entire design, from the emissivity setting to reflected-temperature correction, exists to produce an accurate number.

A hunting or observation device answers a completely different question: is there something alive over there, and how far away can I see it. No temperature value is displayed or even rigorously measured. What matters is the contrast between a warm body and a cold environment, not the accuracy of a figure.

A thermal hunting scope doesn't know the temperature of the animal it detects. It only knows it's warmer than its surroundings.

Why NETD and IFOV don't read the same way

NETD stays relevant in both worlds, but its role changes completely. In diagnostics, a NETD of 40 mK lets you distinguish a 0.04°C insulation defect on a uniform wall. In observation, that same figure determines how far away a 37°C animal still stands out against a 15°C background. The math isn't linear: the further the distance, the more the target's thermal signal dilutes into the atmosphere, and a good NETD partly compensates for that loss.

IFOV also shifts in meaning. In diagnostics, it tells you from what distance you can measure a given object. In observation, it determines the detection distance, generally defined by a standard called the Johnson criterion: how many pixels must cover the target for a human eye to recognize it as an animal rather than an indistinct blob. Hunting-device manufacturers often advertise a "detection distance" in meters that already accounts for this — a figure no diagnostics camera provides, because it makes no sense for that use case.

The vocabulary that should raise a flag

Certain terms unambiguously signal that a device belongs to the observation category rather than the measurement one, even when sold by a manufacturer already known for its diagnostics cameras. A color palette called "birdwatching", a detection distance advertised in hundreds of meters for a lightweight device, the complete absence of a temperature range or emissivity setting in the datasheet: these are the signs of an observation product, not a measuring one.

Conversely, if a product page advertises accuracy in degrees, a continuous emissivity setting, or reflected-temperature correction, it's a measuring device, even if its price or format makes it look like a consumer field tool.

What actually matters for hunting and observation

The advertised detection distance, generally given for a target the size of a person or large game. It's the only figure that's genuinely comparable from one device to another in this category.

Field of view, which works in the opposite direction from detection accuracy: a narrow field sees far but covers little ground, a wide field covers a lot but detects less far. It's the same trade-off as NETD versus IFOV in diagnostics, but applied to a different use case.

Discretion: weight, no visible illumination, battery life for a full evening. A diagnostics device never has to worry about staying quiet or invisible.

Optical magnification, often more decisive than raw sensor resolution for identifying a silhouette at long range.

The legal framework, never to be overlooked

Owning and using thermal-vision devices for hunting is regulated, with rules that vary by game type, hunting method, and jurisdiction. This topic is well beyond the technical scope of this article: check with your local hunting authority before any purchase, as rules have changed in recent years and remain the subject of ongoing regulatory debate.

Why this site doesn't compare these devices
